The present-day territory of the city of Shenzhen was part of Bao'an County, as was the entire territory of Hong Kong, before the British colonization.
The administration of this region began in the Qin Dynasty. In 331, the Dongjin dynasty established Bao'an County, one of the six counties under Dōngguān (东官) Prefecture. In the second year of the Zhide of Suzong under the Tang Dynasty, Dōngguān was renamed to Dōngguǎn (东?), corresponding to the name of the present-day border city north of Shenzhen, Dongguan.
The region began to see great changes when the British arrived and developed trade there. Part of the former county of Bao'an was ceded to the British by various unequal treaties to form the territory of Hong Kong.
