Le Quartier latin se situe sur la rive gauche de la Seine à Paris dans le 5e arrondissement et dans le nord et l'est du 6e arrondissement, avec pour coeur historique la Sorbonne.
The name of the district comes from medieval times during which the only language used for teaching in all these schools and universities was Latin. If today, Latin is stored away for the teaching of ancient languages, the district continues to bear its name well.
But contrary to popular belief, the city of Lutèce (Paris) did not first exist on the island of the city but not far from Nanterre. The Parisii lived there. The town was called Lutecia...
Until 1848, the Latin Quarter, also called "Latin country" was composed of part of the four quarters:
  • The Place Maubert district,
  • The district of Saint-Benoît,
  • The Saint-André-des-Arts district,
  • The district of Saint-Germain-des-Prés.
