Varage-plage, on the edge of the Etang de Berre, France, April 2017
The pond of Berre (in Provençal estang de Berro in Occitan) is a body of water near the Mediterranean Sea to the west of Marseille. The largest natural pond in Europe, it opens onto the Mediterranean Sea via Martigues, the Venice of Provence. A 2nd opening existed before by the Canal Du Rove, a 7km (4.35mi) tunnel connecting it to Marseille...
The boats passed through this tunnel to reach Marseille and avoid the detour via the Blue Coast by skirting Sausset-les-Pins then Carry-le-Rouet. A collapse in June 1963 put an end to this passage. Studies are still underway to reopen it.
Fortunately, life has already resumed its course. Boaters are there as well as walkers. Fishermen are also there to tease the gudgeon.
A new path takes you along this beautiful pond. The birds have found a cozy nest in the Marignane nature reserve. Their flight accompanies another flight, that of commercial planes and canadairs.
Come take a few steps in this haven of peace, you will find serenity there.
Thanks to Laurent and Patou for this unforgettable day under the sky of this Provence that I love, the cradle of my childhood.
Thanks also to Doumette, Patrick, Alain, Régis and the small family of Pacou and Laurent
