Ourense, Spain, September 2022
Here I am off by train to Orense, southeast of Santiago. A modern train, in contrast to the old steam locomotive facing the city's station...

Ourense is a very beautiful city on the Miño river. As I walked these cobblestone streets, I remembered being here before during the pandemic.
The streets weren't as busy as they are today. It's good to see so many people and tourists. The churches are really beautiful, you will see them on another linked page. Many statues line the street. What surprised me the most is the fountain of flowing water. A hot water with which one could drink a tea. I had forgotten that the city is a spa town.
So if you have the opportunity, come and visit it, take the old Roman bridge as well as the modern one (Ponte do Milenio) and don't hesitate to climb the steps of this magnificent bridge metal that gives a grand view of the city.

Baptized by the Romans the "city of gold" (Auriense) because of the abundance of this metal, it was an important city in the Roman province of Hispania until until its gold reserves run out.
Old Roman city and capital of the Suevi (6th and 7th centuries.), it was destroyed by the Moors in 716. It was later rebuilt by Alfonso III of Asturias around 877. Viking raids, as well as attacks by the Arab warlord Al-Mansour, damaged the city on several occasions.
It was only under Sancho II of Castile and his sister Elvira, Lady of Toro that the city was resettled during the 11th century. It was in the 12th century that Ourense became an important service center... The city has three parts: the medieval, the 19th century expansion area, and the modern perimeter. The medieval city, with its narrow streets, its tiny squares has been renovated and is experiencing downtown activity with typical restaurants and bars.
