Parks and statues, Kiev, Ukraine, October 2021
I was surprised by the number of parks in the city of Kiev. They are not as big as in Warsaw but some are really splendid. Kiev is truly a green city, surrounded by forests. If you take the Red metro, stop at Hidropark. It is a completely green island. I would visit there next time, as well as the National Botanical Garden in Kyiv.
I advise you to also go to Saint Vladimir Hill, starting from the Arch of Friendship of Peoples and taking the Glass Bridge, with a breathtaking view. The parks are also decorated with many statues, some of which I give you on this page. You will see the Arche de l'Amitié, a breathtaking monument.
Saint Vladimir Hill is a 10.6ha (0.038sqmi) park. Volodymyrska Hill Park was established in the mid-19th century, its name reflecting the monument to Saint Volodymyr of Kiev which was erected in 1853 in the park.
Hydropark, or Hidropark is a landscape-recreational park. It was created as a leisure complex with mainly water activities: beaches, boating, water attractions. It is located on the Venetian Islands.
The Arch of Friendship between Peoples or Commemorative Arch of the Friendship of Peoples, is a monument dating from the Soviet era located on the banks of the Dnieper. It is a large arch, 50m (164ft) in diameter and 35m (114ft) high, built in a titanium-based alloy, accompanied by a granite stele representing the 1654 Treaty of Pereïaslav and figures in bronze representing the worker and the farmer. Its construction began in 1978 and it was inaugurated in 1982.
Mamayev Kurgan is the place of erection of the Motherland statue. On this hill is a memorial commemorating the Battle of Stalingrad. This battle, probably one of the most famous victories of the USSR over the Axis forces during World War II, was also one of the deadliest in military history.
The Statue of the Motherland (in Russian: literally: "The Call of the Motherland" or "The Motherland is calling !"), is a gigantic statue erected on the Mamayev kurgan in Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad), which was, during the battle of Stalingrad, the stake of fierce and decisive battles for the fall of the Third Reich in Europe. She guards the country (then the USSR), and with her sword pointing skyward, defies anyone who would dare to attack her children. The statue is 85m (279ft) tall. It is made of concrete and metal. The sword measures 33m (108ft).
