The Great Wall of China is one of the most iconic constructions in Chinese history, being a huge fortification erected to protect the country's northern borders. Its construction began during the Qin Dynasty around the 3rd century BC, and was then extended and reinforced by different Chinese dynasties until the 17th century. The wall stretches for more than 21,000 kilometers, crossing mountains, deserts and plains.

It is made of various materials, such as brick, stone and wood. The Great Wall played a crucial role in defending Chinese territory against invasions and raids by nomadic peoples from the north. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
