Transhumance, Salon de Provence, France, May 2024
The transhumance of sheep and goats in Salon de Provence, with my childhood friend Alain...
This practice is very old since it dates back to 1450. Since then, each year, between 40,000 and 50,000 sheep leave Aix-en-Provence and its surroundings for the mountain pastures. From there, the great transhumance will continue to extend northwards.
Today, the animals are brought to the mountain pastures by truck. And the work of the shepherds is all the more peaceful.
