Montmartre, Paris, October 2022
A short stroll through this district with the story of this highly historic place, told by Rémi.
Of course, I took the opportunity to take some Street-art photos...
Rémi told us that the Romans built, at the creation of Lutèce, two temples on this hill, that of Neptune and probably of Mars. Much later, a small church was erected in honor of Saint-Denis, on the site of his death. For the little story (thank you Rémi), the Romans took it off ("cut the head"). This holy man walked, then with his head under his arm, to the Montmartre hill where he died.
This high place was also the theater of the Commune, a revolt of Paris against the State and the refusal to sign a peace treaty with the Austrians who had invaded Paris. I won't tell the whole story, it's better to come and listen to Rémi for that.
The construction of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart is sometimes associated with the events of the Paris Commune under the title that it would have been built to "expiate the crimes of the communards".
Montmartre is also a mecca for art. Many artists settled there.
In 1133-1134, King Louis VI founded the Royal Abbey of the Ladies of Montmartre. The territory of the seigniory of the abbey extends over the western part of the current 18th arrondissement, the northern part of the 9th arrondissement and part of Batignolles. The limit of the parish of Montmartre with the parish of Saint-Eustache was fixed at the chemin du Roule in Saint-Lazare, that is to say at the rue des Porcherons, now rue Saint-Lazare, the streets Coquenard and Notre-Dame -de-Lorette, current rue Lamartine and rue d'Enfer, current rue Bleue.
During the formation of the French communes and departments (decree of November 12, 1789 of the National Assembly), Montmartre became a commune of the Seine department in March 1790. During of the French Revolution, the town temporarily bears the name of "Mont-Marat.
During the extension of Paris from the wall of the Farmers General to the enclosure of Thiers, the commune of Montmartre was abolished by the law of June 16, 1859 and its territory was divided into other boroughs.
Thank you Rémi, organizer of the Meetup group Rando/Balade Paris Ile-de-France 18-50 ans. Thank you for your eloquence and all the stories told, and the anecdotes.
